Short answer: no. Our toolbars, tool tabs, extensions, whatever you call them aren’t viruses, malware, or spyware.
What are tool tab extensions?
Extensions can be thought of as mini programs. They’re small software programs that modify and enhance the functionality of your browser so they “live” within your browser. They don’t stand alone, and can’t always be seen in your “programs”—but that doesn’t mean they’re viruses. In the case of our tool tab extensions, these are mini programs that you (add or download) to bring a customized browser experience to you.
What is a malware, virus or spyware?
Malware is really just an overarching name for both viruses and spyware. It’s anything that is created to damage or disable your computer.
Viruses are specifically pieces of code that are capable of copying themselves. Think of an actual virus, it replicates and makes us sick. Computer viruses have the same general MO. The code will have some sort of detrimental effect; perhaps corrupting or destroying part or all of your computer system.
Spyware, on the other hand, enables users and companies to obtain covert information about your computer activities. All programs, ALL programs, monitor your use to some extent, but spyware specifically does not tell you what it’s monitoring and what that information is being used for.
Is it possible extensions are malware, viruses or spyware?
Absolutely! But it’s rare. The big browser companies (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Edge) have all taken big steps toward checking and confirming software they’re allowing to customize their browser is not malicious. Note - while some antivirus software will notify you that you’re downloading a toolbar, it says nothing about viruses because our products are not viruses. Of course, each antivirus company displays different messages, but we work with all of the major antivirus companies to ensure they know who we are, and what we’re offering.
